What a proper job looks like

Tree work is the trade where the wrong hire does the most damage, to your roof, your neighbour's fence and the tree itself. The standard any arborist quoting here should meet: £5 million public liability insurance shown on request, NPTC or LANTRA chainsaw and climbing tickets for the person actually doing the cutting, an itemised written quote, and a waste carrier licence number for taking the timber and chip away.

Before anyone prices a job, two checks should happen as routine: whether the tree carries a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a conservation area (fines for getting this wrong are unlimited), and, between March and August, a nesting-bird check. Any firm that skips those isn't worth your money.
